Inspiration in blog land, of late.

This little blogland we're a part of is a funny place. So weird- you have "friends" that you may never meet or actually speak but that you feel you know and start to consider real friends. Ca-razy. I don't know about you, but when I first started my blog and started really reading other blogs, it was mainly for the inspiration I found in blogland. Beautiful pictures, funny stories, DIY ideas I wanted to try. I am a very visual person, so seeing gorgeous images of home decor, adorable kiddos, a refinished piece of furniture- that spoke to me. Inspired me. Got my creative juices flowing to get off my booty and start learning to take decent pictures, get out a can of paint, attempt to cook dinner or rearrange a room. Don't even get me started on what Pinterest brought to the game..

But lately the inspiration I've been finding has been more meaningful. It's been through words. And frankly, that's just what I've needed right now. Life is trying to throw me a curveball, but I'll be damned if I'm not going to go down swinging.

So.

I thought I would share a little of what has been inspiring and encouraging me lately, in terms of blog posts. Of course, my faith and trust are in Jesus alone, but it's always nice to come across something in another part of your life that speaks to you at just the right moment. And I don't doubt for a second that he's orchestrating it.

I love the way Shannon at Flower Patch Farm Girl writes. Always have, always will. She's very honest and witty and has a great way with words. Plus, her kids are too adorable for words.

She just wrote a post about this book out called 7: An experimental mutiny against excess by Jen Hatmaker.

BTW- be sure you read her hilarious letter the to author of the book, asking for a free copy. :)

The author gave up something huge, something important to her, each month for seven months. Big things, like clothes, food, spending, media..

But not in the typical way. Nope. For one month she only ate SEVEN foods. Seven. Another month she only wore seven articles of clothing. For a month. Seven.

I can't even wrap my mind around that.

The goal was to simplify. We have so much excess in our lives, it's not even funny. I'm not entirely sure I'll be trying this, even a little bit, but the idea is very, very compelling. It definitely got me thinking about what I waste my time doing and thinking about... Maybe I'll start with just reading the book :)

This was the first post I read of Jami's at Hello from the Natos.

WOW is all I can say. I couldn't wait to read more.  She's talking about infidelity and forgiveness in this post. But you don't have to have experienced that type of betrayal to benefit here, believe me.
It's the forgiveness.

An excerpt that rocked my sock's off (emphasis is my own):

"you are just as jacked up as your husband. your heart is so dark. you betray Jesus everyday and he still loves you. he doesn't wait for you to do enough to pay for your sins, so he can finally take you back. no. you enjoy grace and mercy and unmerited forgiveness. every day. actually, every hour.

and now, you get to be a mirror of the Gospel to your spouse. because what can they do to make up for defiling you in such a way? nothing actually. nothing would ever be good enough. would it?

so instead of making them work for your forgiveness, you start with forgiveness. you make a decision. and you make a choice to absorb the cost of that forgiveness.

it's very costly, isn't it?
that's why it's a gift. like the gift Jesus gave to us when he absorbed our sins and said, no more. i'm paying for this. the cost is too great. i'll give my only son.
expensive and extravagant.

and so when we forgive, we mirror christ's forgiveness. we pay the tab. we stop making our spouse pick up the check. we say, no more. you can't pay enough for this.

this is the Gospel lived out in a tangible way. you recognize the darkness of your own heart and see the need for Jesus to save you. and that gift that God gave you, you give to others because you are just as terrible. and i'm not going to lie, it is difficult and hard and grievous to walk these steps in front of you. but you can because Jesus did."

Wow, right? She's also hilarious, which is big in my book. I'm excited to read more. Like this. And this and this. So honest.

It's so easy to get caught up in what's around us.. distractions and interests that are fine, in and of themselves, but can take up too much of our time and energy if we let them. Which ultimately takes us away from our time with Him. Priorities, that's what it's about. I enjoy blogging and reading blogs, but I have to remind myself at times to log off. And I know I'm not the only one who struggles with it. But He meets us just where we are. Inspires us right where we are. And sometimes gives us a swift kick in the rear to jump start the whole thing.
Like today. Just as I was writing this post (and putting off doing actual work. That I get paid to do),
my internet connection went out. Done. Off. I kept pushing the refresh button on all six pages I had open, and nada. And as much as I wanted to blame Cox Communications, I knew it was God.

Oh, I thought. Duh. Shut it off, Aja. Pray. Sing. Praise Jesus and do it now.

So I did.

Just the kick in the pants inspiration I needed today.

A Few Things

Good afternoon lovelies!

I have been promising myself that I would not only have Bumpdate posts while I'm pregnant, since I know that gets boring for about half of you.. so for today I'm sharing a few randoms.

1. Our glider was delivered on Wednesday! Finally. I totally took a picture of it sitting on our little front stoop/porch, but of course forgot to upload the picture. So let me describe it for you: No box. White glider. Same size as said stoop/porch. Plastic wrap haphazardly pushed off of the chair and falling behind it, as though some nosy neighbor had seen fit to get a better look at what exactly was delivered.
MAJOR FAIL, Pottery Barn delivery, MAJOR FAIL.
And then they called and woke me up on Saturday morning to schedule a time to deliver the blasted thing.

2. I thought I was going into labor yesterday. Well, kinda. I just felt different and had all sorts of "extra" pains/cramps/lightening pangs.. and what I am just certain were mild contractions! Clearly still pregnant, and feeling more or less "normal" today, so WHATEVER.

3. Are you watching the Real Housewives of Atlanta?? What is up with crazy Phaedra not knowing how far along she is and saying her doctor is going to induce her at 7 months?? Crazytown!! Also, Kim- you can't sing. Can't even carry a flippin tune. Get over yourself. This is why I love the Real Housewives. Trashy smut? Yes, probably, but pure entertainment.

4. I love Alec Baldwin. I watched "It's Complicated" again last night and he just cracks me up. Love him in 30 Rock, too.

5. Can you believe that Thanksgiving is next week??? Unbelievable. However, I have come to realize that I may be able to go my whole life without ever having to cook a turkey. And this suite me just fine.

6. I have been thinking of re-doing our front living room lately. Because I just don't have anything else going on right now, you know? A few inspiration photos I like:

Anyone sensing a theme?

Sorry, no sources. Blogging FAIL. I'm sorry!!!

7. Have you all turned on your heat yet? I am steadfastly refusing, even though it's about 10 degrees colder in our house than it is outside. I'm usually the cold one, but this whole oven/baby cooker thing has apparently gone to a whole other level, because I am loving it. Especially at night. Hubby came to bed in long johns and a knit cap last night, though, so I may have to give in soon..

8. And, finally- what we've all been thinking all day- What is up with Jessica Simpson getting engaged just DAYS after Nick Lachey??? I mean, seriously??? She's been dating this "football player" for a mere 6 months! This makes you look majorly desperate, JSimp!

Blog Love: Prudent Baby

I'm sure you all are getting sick of hearing all the baby talk lately.. to that I say DEAL. I'm preggo and have babies and baby projects on the brain.

I also still have my constant DIY/home decor thought stream coursing through my brain, but it's taken just a slight back burner spot here on the ol blog.

ANYway.

I found this blog today and O.M.G., can we just say the heavens opened up and rained down sewing machines and cutsie baby projects and now my list is so long I can wrap it around my belly 3.84 times.

Feast your eyes:

Love the chevron. Love the colors. Love it all.

One Shoulder Dressy Dress

How cute is this?? Adorable for next summer.

DIY Diaper Cover

Totally love these diaper covers. Nothing is cuter than a chubby little baby with nothing on but a onesie or tshirt and diaper, so we can see those squeezable legs.

Recycled Rug Ottoman

Not sure I need to recycle an old rug to try this one out, but I love this idea! Clearly I have ottomans on the brain. I'd love to have some this shape or more like big, soft floor pillows to throw around and lay on in the nursery.

Sooo cute. I'm not a girly girl, but surely every little lady needs an adorable tutu to play dress-up in or for a quick trip to Target.

Most awesome of all? All of the projects are listed out in awesome categories, like By Craft, Under an Hour, In One Evening, etc.

LOVE IT.

And if you don't have a little one to make something for, make something for Tiny Dancer!!

Inspiration/To-do List

As I peruse all the fun and fabulous blogs out there, my mind is constantly working and thinking through upcoming projects I want to tackle. Sometimes I just get so excited and want to run out and start all of them right now, and to h*ll with things like work and housecleaning and regular bathing!

:)

But first, I'll need a million dollars to fund my little projects.

So here are some ideas I'm currently loving and would like to do/make/try/whatever:

Painted/Stencil Accent Wall

via Centsational Girl

Okay, LOVING this idea. I have seen people do this with a stencil and paint all over blogland lately and want to hitch up my wagon to this Oregon Trail. Yes, it seems a bit time consuming, but when are my projects ever quick and easy?? And if it doesn't turn out, you just paint right over it! No tearing down wallpaper. The trick is finding the perfect spot in my home to do it. I would actually love to try it out in our master bedroom, since it's a den of un-decoratedness, but that would involve convincing the mister, which is a little more work..
Check out more inspiration for this idea here, here and of course here.

Fun Striped Knit Baby Blanket

via Sharstin Miller Photography

This one is in the bag, my friends. I spied some fun yarn at JoAnne Fabrics a while back (that surprisingly wasn't too plastic/acrylic-y feeling.. yes, I'm a yarn snob) and scooped them up with a gift card my mom had sent. Thanks mom! I'm more than halfway done and am already envisioning all the photo shoots I'll be setting up for Tiny Dancer.

DIY Drum Pendant Light

via The Keylor Family

I am loving drum shades right now. Especially pendants. Not that that love translates into actually having any in my home. YET. These babies are pricey and I knew there had to be a way to make one yourself for a fraction of the cost. Her tools? Burlap and embroidery hoops. Doesn't get any cheaper than that! This is on my nursery to-do list.

DIY Ottoman

via Velvet & Linen, House Beautiful and Three Men and a Lady

This has looong been on my radar. With so many great ideas and ways of pulling this off, I've just been waiting for the right piece to makeover to tackle this. I've seen people build their own from scratch, repurpose an old square or round coffee table (like my friend Katie just did!), add padding to a bench, etc. This will also take more convincing of the hubs.. that we'll actually need something soft like this for when the baby is toddling around. You really can't beat blaming new projects or design purchases on the kid.

Baby Photo Montage

How fun is this?? They bought a bunch of different pieces of fun fabrics, pillowcases, sheets, whatever and take pics of their little one each week! Then they'll make a photobook for the grandparents after her first year! Possibly a lot of work, but who are we kidding, I'll be snapping lots of pics of Tiny Dancer anyway.
Mom? Dad? Grandparents?? Act surprised if you get one of these in a year and a half. Also, act nonchalant if you don't. Thanks.

I better get to work!!
What have you been inspired by lately? Is there anything on your project to-do list?
